Did you know that a Koala sleeps 18 to 22 hours a day?
A Koala is only active for 2 to 6 hours a day, and during these hours, they mainly eat and reproduce. The eucalyptus leaves they consume contain very few nutrients and also contain toxins that are difficult to digest. Digesting these eucalyptus leaves takes a lot of time and energy, which is why they need rest, and they receive so little nutrition that they simply don’t have enough energy to stay awake for longer. The Koala’s nervous system is well adapted to efficiently manage energy. Their calm, sedentary behavior helps conserve energy.
The idea that Koalas are constantly stoned from eating eucalyptus leaves and that this makes them sluggish is a myth.
