Did you know that clinking glasses during toasts likely originated in the Middle Ages with knights?
Knights fought many wars but also made peace. When making peace, they often drank beer. However, the knights didn’t trust each other at all and feared poison in their beer. To ensure they weren’t being poisoned, they would slam their full mugs of beer together forcefully, causing some beer to splash into the other knight’s mug. This guaranteed that no one would poison the other’s drink, as there was a chance the poison would end up in their own mug. However, it’s difficult to find conclusive evidence to support this theory.
