Did you know that the longest bridge (over water) on Earth is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in the United States?
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is a famous bridge in the United States that spans Lake Pontchartrain in the state of Louisiana. This bridge consists of two parallel spans and is recognized as the longest bridge in the world over water, measured by the total length over the lake. The total length of the bridge is 38.35 kilometers (23.83 miles).
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway connects the city of Metairie, near New Orleans, with Mandeville on the northern shore of the lake. The original bridge was completed in 1956, and the second parallel bridge was built in 1969 to increase capacity.
The bridge is supported by thousands of concrete pilings and serves as a vital connection for commuters between the two sides of the lake. Although the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the longest over water in the world, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway remains the longest “continuous bridge” over water.
Another long bridge is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. This bridge and tunnel system spans the Lingding and Jiuzhou waters in the South China Sea, connecting the cities of Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau. The total length of the bridge and tunnel system is approximately 55 kilometers, of which about 38 kilometers consist of bridge sections that run directly over the water. Therefore, this bridge is shorter if you don’t count the sections that don’t span water.
