Did you know that around 1 billion cells in your body are replaced every hour?
The cells that are replaced are either old or dead and are therefore replaced by new cells. These include a wide variety of cells, from hair to skin and from muscles to nails, as well as blood cells, intestinal cells, and liver cells. Different types of cells are replaced at different rates. Skin cells are replaced about once every 4 weeks, while blood cells are replaced every 120 days. This cell division and replacement process means that our body is essentially completely renewed roughly every year. The human body has a total of about 37 trillion (37,000,000,000,000) cells, so the 1 billion cells replaced per hour is a relatively modest amount.
