Did you know that a hedgehog has over 5,000 spines?
On average, a hedgehog has between 5,000 and 7,000 spines, although this number can vary depending on the species and age of the animal. These spines are essentially hairs that have been transformed into sharp, sturdy points and serve as an important defense mechanism. When a hedgehog feels threatened, it curls up into a tight ball, with the spines facing outward, forming an almost impenetrable barrier against potential predators.
The spines are embedded in the hedgehog’s skin and are continuously replaced throughout its life. These spines also have another function: they help the hedgehog find food and navigate its environment by sensing vibrations and movements. Therefore, maintaining and protecting these spines is crucial for the hedgehog’s well-being.
